US economic growth slowed unexpectedly in the second quarter of the year

US economic growth slowed unexpectedly in the second quarter of the year, expanding at an annual rate of 1.5%, down from 2.1% in the first quarter and below analysts' expectations of around 2%, according to the Commerce Department.

The slowdown was driven by weaker government spending, investment, and exports, despite a strong rebound in consumer spending, which rose 3.2%. Economists said the figures still reflect underlying resilience in the US economy, with expectations that growth could return above 2% later this year as investment outside the AI sector gains momentum.
